Butt springs are nearly always fitted to overstrung actions. They help in the smooth return of the hammer.

How to determine wether your springs are L/H or R/H.........With the action either in the piano or on your bench, look over the hammers and down onto the Butt springs. The main arm of the spring will come out of the coil on the right or the left. (please note that the above image is for illustration purposes only.
